GE Aerospace’s GEnx Engine Achieves 2 Million Flight Hours Milestone

GE Aerospace proudly announced that its GEnx commercial aviation engine family has reached an impressive milestone—accumulating two million flight hours with South Asian airlines. Since its first delivery in 2012, the GEnx engine has powered 90 aircraft across airlines like Air India, Vistara, and Biman Bangladesh. This achievement underscores the engine’s reliability, efficiency, and sustainability, making it a crucial player in the region’s aviation growth.

GE Aerospace’s Commitment to Aviation Growth in South Asia

Mahendra Nair, Group Vice President for Commercial Programs at GE Aerospace, stated that the GEnx engine has played a vital role in supporting the expansion of aviation in South Asia. With advanced technology and unmatched performance, the GEnx engine consistently delivers superior fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions.

The GEnx engine is a top choice for airlines, particularly when powering the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 747-8. It delivers 15% better fuel efficiency, and furthermore, it reduces CO2 emissions by up to 15%. As a result, it aligns with the aviation industry’s focus on sustainability.

Moreover, the engine’s twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor cuts nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 60%, which exceeds current environmental standards. At the same time, engineers at GE Aerospace’s technology center in Bengaluru have worked closely with regional customers. By doing so, they introduced foam wash and blade inspection technologies to improve time-on-wing and lower maintenance costs.

In 2023, Vistara flew its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner using a 30% blend of SAF with conventional fuel. Thanks to the GEnx engine, this eco-friendly flight was successfully completed.

GE Aerospace Utilizes AI for Predictive Maintenance

With a focus on improving service quality, GE Aerospace employs artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to monitor GEnx engines in real-time.

These digital tools help predict maintenance needs and improve overall engine performance.

GE Aerospace’s AI-enabled Blade Inspection Tool (BIT) enhances accuracy, allowing technicians to inspect High-Pressure Turbine blades quickly and efficiently.

GE Aerospace continues to set new benchmarks in aviation technology, as demonstrated by the GEnx engine’s two million flight hours. As Air India expands its wide-body fleet with 40 new GEnx engines, the company remains committed to delivering cutting-edge technology that balances performance, efficiency, and sustainability. With innovations like 360 Foam Wash and AI-driven predictive maintenance, GE Aerospace is poised to drive the future of aviation.
